Complaint Process

How to Make a Complaint About an RPA Member, Affiliate, Firm, or Student

We can only assist with your complaint if the individual is a member of the Society of Professional Accountants of Canada (SPAC), a student member, or if the accounting firm is regulated by us.

In many cases, issues can be resolved by discussing the matter directly with your accountant. If that does not resolve the issue, we recommend writing to your accountant and requesting a response within 14 days. Should you remain unable to resolve the problem or if the issue is of a serious nature, you may contact SPAC for assistance.

Before You Make a Complaint

  1. Verify Membership:
    • Ensure that the accountant or accounting firm is registered with SPAC. The accountant must be an RPA, an affiliate of SPAC, or an RPA student.
    • Visit rpacanada.org to verify membership or contact SPAC at +1 877-515-4447.
  2. Relevant Issue Areas:
    • If your complaint relates to an audit, insolvency, investment business, or legal services matter, a different process applies. Please refer to the relevant section for more details.
  3. Gather Supporting Documents:
    • Make sure you have copies of all relevant letters and documents to support your complaint. We may not be able to assist you without documentary evidence.
  4. Criminal Matters:
    • If your issue involves a criminal matter, you should report it to the police or the relevant authority for investigation. Please inform us once you have reported the issue.
  5. Civil Claims:
    • If you believe you have grounds for a civil claim, seek legal advice immediately and do not wait for our investigation process to conclude.

How to Make a Complaint

Please note that as part of the investigation process, details of the complaint will be disclosed to the SPAC member, accounting firm, or student member who is the subject of the complaint.

If you are unable to email the documents, please contact us for alternate submission methods.
